The Epi-Pen Could Save Your Life!

An epi-pen is essential if you’re at risk for anaphylactic shock. If your doctor prescribes one, don’t leave home without it!

The device holds epinephrine, or adrenaline. This chemical messenger will quickly reduce the dangerous symptoms of a severe allergic reaction to food, bee stings, or other allergens, which include severe swelling, leading to the inability to breathe.

EpiPen is a brand name of the product manufactured by DEY L.P., while Verus Pharmaceuticals makes Twinject, a device with two separate doses inside.

The product, as its name suggests, looks something like a pen. Inside is the liquid medication, along with a needle that pops out when the device is activated. The adult dose is 0.3 mg, while the children’s version (for kids 33-66 pounds, or 15-30 kg) gives 0.15 mg of epinephrine.

To use the name-brand product, you remove the cap, and press the black end to your thigh until you hear a “click.” This tells you the device has been activated. You still need to hold it in place for about 10 to 15 seconds, so the tissues can absorb the medication. You can apply the device through clothes, if necessary. The EpiPen website has a video to show you how to use their product. The Twinject works a little differently, and you can look at that video by clicking here.

In the event of anaphylactic shock, you should call for an ambulance after administering the pen—an epinephrine injection is only a first-aid measure. And always be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully—anaphylaxis is no joke!
